Official IRC Channel - #reddit-sysadmin on Official Discord -. I've been deploying a Citrix Xenapp environment (Windows 7 Pro, Windows Server 2008 R2) over the past 6 months and our biggest issue so far has definitely been printing. We've tried sharing printers by a Print Server, Citrix Session Printers, Citrix Universal Printing, etc.
Each one of these options has a huge drawback somewhere and we've had to start from scratch a few times; these issues are slow printing, printers not showing up in Citrix applications, print drivers not cooperating with Citrix, etc. The best method by far has been mapping the printer locally by IP. I'm trying to find the best, most automated way to deploy printers to my users.
Cccam Script Install Printers
I've found that in Windows 7 there are some Printer Admin VB scripts (C: windows system32 PrintingAdminScripts) that seem to work pretty well for this scenario, however, normal domain users do not have the appropriate permissions to add print drivers or to add printers. I see that there are a few options via GPO that I can use to give my users permissions to add drivers but I want to be sure that these are all I need and ask if anyone else is using these. Any suggestions or feedback? SOLUTION Thanks to I have discovered that using GPP was the way to go.
Here is a good guide for those who need some detail on how to get it working:. We've already went down the print server road and it isn't what we want.
We went from 2 servers handling printers for 26 locations, then one day the print spooler service became corrupt and half of the business was unable to print. We split them all up to have a print server per branch and ran into a ton of issues with Citrix.
Printers took anywhere from 1-5 minutes to print a simple Word doc, printers might show up, etc. We finally decided that mapping printers to individual workstations via IP address (no server) was the best way to go. And honestly, after testing this theory for a few weeks, it's worked out better than anything else we've thrown at the situation. I did just this same damn thing a month ago. Had to remove all our old print server printers so we can direct IP map them for citrix.

Script below installs the print driver, creates a port, and then creates the printer using the port and driver. I think we used PSEXEC to remotely install the driver. Look at step 7 here For our citrix we use the full 12.3 client.
People still bitch about having to go full screen across two screen and it wants to expand across both and not act as 2. Sometime the printers don't come over.
Some times adobe starts to fuck up. For most part to fix most of the issues it's log off and back on of the citrix.
We're still new in our roll out as well. People have started to either hate it less, or deal with it. Some things are slow that shouldn't be though, like editing a PDF or something. Honestly i'm sure if I like it or not. Admining it is great, from a user perspective though. Isn't that pretty old?
What version of XenX are you using? We are using Xenapp 6.5 with a mix of 3.4u3, 4.0 and 4.1 Receiver. A coworker told me that I can run the script as a Computer Startup script and it will use as SYSTEM. Seems to be working great so far. Citrix is a weird beast. The things that should work have little quirks and problems, but the things you don't expect to work do.
I think that doing Published Apps like what we do is not a solid solution; I'd rather do Published Desktops instead. I'm just not very happy with Citrix and the end results. Support is pretty horrible too.
I've noticed that most printer install scripts just map to shared printers on the network. This script creates an IP Port, installs the driver from an INF file and installs the printer.
You'll need to supply the proper values for your printer. This utilizes windows built-in vbs printer routines. I have created a batch for each of my printers so that my users can launch them from our Intranet to install the printers that they need.
These scripts are available on Win XP but can be copied to the appropriate path for Win 7. File cccam-version: portrule Categories: Download: User Summary Detects the CCcam service (software for sharing subscription TV among multiple receivers). The service normally runs on port 12000.
It distinguishes itself by printing 16 random-looking bytes upon receiving a connection. Because the script attempts to detect 'random-looking' bytes, it has a small chance of failing to detect the service when the data do not seem random enough. Example Usage nmap -sV Requires. Author:. Hi All, Can anyone of you help me in creating a script. I have a request to add around 1000+ printers onto a print server, the driver name, port name, printer name, share name has already been defined. I want to create a script which will pull details like printer name, Driver name, Port name & share name from a.xls,.txt,.csv file & would add the printer to the print servers & create a.xls or.csv output file with details weather the printer has been added successfully or not & in case of failure the failure should be documented in a 'Remark' field.
Thanks in advance. Regards, Manoj Kumar Mehra. Hi Bill, To be honest i don't know much about scripting, i have a requirement which i though someone might help me with.
I understand writing a customized piece of script is a tedious task & require good amount of skills. I would love to share a script to troubleshoot further however i don't have one to begin with:-( I am currently googling to look for a script which reads a.csv or.xls file & execute a script but i am not sure what would i do with that:-) Start by telling us which print spooler WS2003/8/R2? Are all of the printers TCPIP? Have you installed all of teh drivers yet? It is generally not possible to script teh driver installation. YOu will need teh vendors installer files for most advanced printers.
In the reposiroty are a number of scritps that can install print queues. I would start by studying those. You may have 1000 printers but I suspect you have only a few printer models. That can make this easier. Once you have a script that works in your environment you can design a file to drive the script. If on WS2008 or later you can use Print Manager to migrate printers from domain to domain.
We just migrated about 100+ printers from WS2003 to WS2008R2. The only drawback was moving from 32 bit to 64 bits. It requires manual intervention to upgrade the drivers.
